| Buffalo Nickel Mintage Numbers 1913-38 |

In the years spanning 1913 to 1938 there were approximately 1.2-billion Buffalo Nickels minted at three different Mints - Philadelphia (no mintmark), Denver (D) and San Francisco (S). Only 16,148 Proof coins were minted at the Philadelphia Mint in the years 1913-16, 1936 and 1937.
When you compare the total Buffalo Nickel mintage to that of later coinage, it becomes apparent just how rare Buffalo Nickels are. There were 1.8-billion 1964-D Jefferson Nickels minted at the Denver Mint alone.... 600-million more than all of the Buffalo Nickels ever minted!

The tables below present the individual mintages for each year/mint combination in the 64-coin Buffalo Nickel series. Key and semi-key dates are high-lighted as: key dates - less than 2.5-million, semi-key dates - 2.5 to 5-million, other low mintage dates - 5 to 8-million. Over 64 % of all Buffalo Nickels were minted at the Philadelphia Mint in the years 1913, 1916-20, 1923, 1925-27, 1929, and 1935-37. Compare that to the 30 lower mintage year/mint coins that combined to represent just less than just 12 % of the total mintage.
