What is a Certified Population Report ?
A Population Report is a reference guide prepared by a 3rd party grading service that can be used to help assess the relative rarity of a coin. Population reports show the number of coins at different grade levels certified by a particular grading service. Keep in mind that rarity is only one factor to consider in determining the value of a coin.
|
A Population report's accuracy is limited by characteristics inherent to the marketplace. You should consider these limitations to avoid being misled by the data in the Population report. For example, certain coins may appear rare because a certification service has very few records of that coin being graded. This may be explained by the fact that inexpensive coins are not usually submitted for certification, and does not indicate a higher value. As another example, certified coins removed from their holders without notice to the certification service will still appear in the data.
